Why Smolt?

Why did we choose to name our main blog "smolt"? Well, we wanted our site to have a salmon theme because that is the common ground that initially linked the partnership between the Siuslaw and Sakhalin. We decided on "smolt" because a smolt is the life-stage of salmon when they are getting prepared to leave their home stream and venture out to the great, big ocean. A smolt, in comparison, is similar to a teenager. Since middle and high school students will be using this blog series to communicate about salmon and other related topics it seemed like a title that fit.

Welcome!

Welcome to the Smolt blog. This blog is designed to provide a medium for communications between schools in the Siuslaw Watershed (Oregon, USA) and schools on Sakhalin Island (Russia). The Smolt blog will give overviews of the schools' Natural Resource, Salmon and Watershed Education Programs as well as background information on how this connection across the Pacific Ocean originated (see CATEGORIES on the right). The Smolt blog also functions as a gateway to additional blogs about Community, Economy and Habitat. (You can see the links to those blogs on the left.) These blogs create a space for in-depth presentation and discussion about social and ecological aspects from research and viewpoints of students of both countries.

Each of the blogs can be read in Russian or English; you can choose the language option on the top left side.

DISCLAIMER: The student's entries do not claim to officially represent viewpoints of their school or any of the partners involved in this project; however, all efforts are made to  present an accurate and broad-spectrum view of the topics.
